The brand was created in 1946 by two good friends, Harold Graham and Henry Brown. With the great shortage of paper after the war, Henry and Harold cleverly acquired a stock of metal paper, an eight-colour surface printer and a new embossing machine, with which they began the wallpaper revolution. People were desperate to brighten their homes after the harsh years of war and Graham & Brown had trouble meeting the demand. The company grew rapidly.

At the ethos of Graham & Brown is a strong respect for employees, customers and the environment, which is due to the way Henry Brown ran the company. He made sure to take care of his employees when they had problems or were sick, and so several generations of the same family became part of Graham & Brown's family.

In the 1970s, Graham & Brown produced millions of wallpaper rolls per year, making it one of Britain's largest independent wallpaper manufacturers and a growing force in Europe. New ideas were introduced, such as washable vinyl wall coverings.

Thanks to its innovations and creativity, Graham & Brown launched its now famous Superfresco brand, which was, just as today, easy to install (and remove), could be painted or washed.

The 1990s saw new innovations, and in 1992, Graham & Brown produced the world's first "no lot" wall coverings, and with the new century, the company introduced another innovation - "stick the wall" technology - to a contemporary audience through a new advertising campaign. New partnerships have been formed with the creator Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, followed quickly by Linda Baker, hemingwaydesign, Jans des Bouvrie, Marcel Wanders and more recently Kelly Hoppen.

The international expansion that had begun in the United States has grown over the past ten years with subsidiaries in France, Holland, Russia, Canada and China, as well as a most recent one in Germany.
